Stage 8 Desio
Fabiana Luperini (Menikini) sealed the victory which she put into place on Stage 7, with her win in the mountains by staying safe and finishing in the bunch on the final, flat stage. The Italian took her fifth Giro Donne victory, although it had been eight years since her last win in the event. Stage 8 was a day for the sprinters. With the points jersey still undecided, leader Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (Team Columbia) and Kirsten Wild (AA Drink) in a position to take the overall title, the bunch sprint was not just for final stage honours. An early break by Marta Vilajosana Andreu (Team Dila) was allowed to stay away for a couple of the seven laps which constituted the closing kilometres of the stage. Then, Zoulfia Zabirova (Team Bigla) and Julia Martissova (Gauss) made things lively with a penultimate lap breakaway. The pair were chased down by the peloton, led by several Team Columbia riders and the finale was set for a bunch sprint. The bunch came back into Desio for the finale and the sprinters came to the front. Ina-Yoko Teutenberg rounded off a superb Giro by winning the stage and taking the points jersey, whilst Kirsten Wild, having tried several different tactics to beat the German in sprints, once more had to settle for second. Giorgia Bronzini was third over the line. Race winner, Fabiana Luperini rolled across the finish line quietly in the bunch, sitting up as she did so. The celebrations started soon afterwards for Luperini, who was carried to the podium ceremony on the shoulders of members of her fan club. The presentations were drowned out at times by the chants of the crowd celebrating the win by the diminutive Italian.
