Souvenir Magali Pache Soeder victorious Sion, Switzerland, Elite invitational Time Trial
The Souvenir Magali Pache is a time trial dedicated to Swiss former junior World Time Trial Champion, Magali Pache. She died in a race accident in France on September 3rd 2000. She rode for the Swiss National team and in the year of her death was Swiss track champion in the omnium event. The 2008 event was in danger of not being run, due to financial problems, but was saved by assistance from the Cervelo Lifeforce team and by Cervelo (a bike manufacturer) itself. First prize was a TT frame, in addition to the 1000euro equivalent prize. Invitation critieria is for the top 6 time triallists in the preceding year's World Championships, the top 8 riders based on end of 2007 UCI rankings and then four 'wild card' participants. A notable exception from the 2008 start list was 2007 World Time Trial Champion, Hanka Kupfernagel (Germany). The competition took place an hour prior to the men's Tour of Romandie (run on the same course) and thereby guaranteeing large crowds for the women. The town of Sion was bathed in sun and blessed with warm temperatures on this Friday in the south of Switzerland. Christiane Soeder (Cervelo Lifeforce) was an emphatic winner, 22 seconds ahead of team-mate, Kristin Armstrong. Third place went to Amber Neben (Team Flexpoint).
