There was a strong wind for
all the teams to contend with on this warm, sunny day at the coast in
Aude. Feedback from riders after their warm-up lap indicated that it was
either head-on or tailwind, meaning that there was little in the way of
crosswinds for the teams to deal with.
The race leader, Susanne
Ljungskog was off early in the field, Menikini Selle Italia were sixth
team to start. She finished with only two other team-mates, Miho Oki and
Natalie Bates. With the first three to count towards the team time, her
other team-mates were able to do their jobs early on, then come into the
finish with a little more comfort, perhaps saving a little energy for
future stages in this long tour.
Whilst several teams
finished en-masse with 5 riders, the winning team was the Netherlands,
which split into two groups of three before the finish. The fastest three
coming in to the finish 6 seconds faster than any rival. Second place, on
the other hand, was taken by High Road, who were led to the finish by
Ina-Yoko Teutenberg as a group of five.
High Road, as T-Mobile last
year won the TTT stage, although with drama. On two occasions riders
accidentally went off course. 2008 was a lot smoother for the team without
any such incidents and although the ride was sufficient to put Judith
Arndt into the race leader's yellow jersey, they would surely have been
aiming for the stage victory too.

"It was so
close a call and the differences were so minimal we can't regret not
winning too much." High Road sports director Ronny
Lauke said afterwards. "We did everything we could,
it was just a case of the Netherlands
team being that little bit stronger on the day. Plus we got the lead,
which is hugely important and a great consolation prize."
"The first
three kilometres of the course were crucial, because there were a lot of
roundabouts and other road furniture to get past. Once we'd done that
technical part, the course wasn't so difficult and the riders could really
give it everything."
"Everybody
played their part. Judith and Linda Villumsen kept the pace high on the
one key climb mid-way through, and then the other riders covered the
flatter sections before and afterwards. In the last part there was a
strong tailwind which meant we really flew all the way back to the finish."
"Fortunately
this time it wasn't so complicated, we didn't have any technical problems
or punctures. Even though it was really windy, it was no different for any
of the rival teams even if they had started earlier than us. Apart from
the first few kilometres, it was a real course for specialists, one in
which the top team time triallists could produce a lot of power."
