BikeReg.com MABRAcross opens Breast Cancer Awareness Month Looking to Exceed Last Year’s Record $3000 Donation October
has been declared Breast Cancer Awareness month in America.
And, for the fourth straight year, cycling club AVC / Hagerstown
Washington County is in the forefront of the cause with promotion of their
annual Breast Cancer Awareness Cyclocross in Hagerstown Maryland on
Saturday, October 6. The race,
round 3 of the BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series, will benefit Breast Cancer
Awareness of the Cumberland Valley (hopeforu.org).
With record attendance at both of the Series’ previous races this
year, promoters Joe Jefferson and Tim Lung hope to significantly improve on
last year’s $3000 donation to the organization. According
to Jefferson, this battle is personal, “Janet Lung, the wife of my
co-promoter, is a Breast Cancer survivor. The
team took on the promotion of this event four years ago, since the illness
had hit so close to home. We
believe that everyone in the cycling community “know somebody who knows
somebody” that has been touched by this illness.”
Originally held at a local high school, the organizers moved the
event last year to the vastly more spacious Hagerstown Fairgrounds with the
help of its sponsors. This
year, the race is being assisted by The Washington County Convention and
Visitor Bureau, Hagerstown Trust and Dona Hobart, M.D. of Robinwood Surgical
Associates. As
part of the fast-growing BikeReg.com MABRAcross Series, community
involvement with this race is important.
Much effort is spent promoting each race to the local media and MABRA
rules require that all races in the series to include a free “Lil’
Belgians” children’s race. These
kid’s races, on a specially made “kid-size” cyclocross tracks complete
with miniature plank barriers, form the basis of the organization’s
community outreach. At this
year’s Breast Cancer Awareness race, the organizers will reach out to the
community in an even more tangible way, according to Jefferson.
“Rather than bringing in outside concessionaires, we have
invited the local elementary school, Fountaindale Elementary School for the
Arts, to sell hot dogs and hamburgers in an effort to raise money for the
local PTA also.” The
Breast Cancer Awareness Cyclocross takes place on Saturday, October 6.
Additional information and pre-registration is available at
BikeReg.com. Also available at
BikeReg.com, for those racers who can’t attend or who want to do a little
bit more, is a simple way to make a donation to Breast Cancer Awareness of
the Cumberland Valley. Now
every cyclist can participate in the Breast Cancer Awareness Cyclocross --
even if they are on a different continent.
