Preview Invercargill March 13 - March 17
Preview - First ever indoor championships 233
cyclists will line up from Tuesday at the 2007 Lion Foundation national
track cycling championships, as New Zealand readies itself to host its first
indoor national track championships at the ILT Velodrome in Invercargill. The
track championships are expected to see numerous national records fall as
the indoor surface traditionally provides faster times than many outdoor
tracks, and this is the first national event since the velodrome opened in
May 2006. While
most of New Zealand’s elite male cyclists are in Valencia preparing for
the track world championships (March 29-April 1), a very strong men’s
under 19 and elite women’s field will be competing, including six women
from the New Zealand 2006 Commonwealth Games team. Catherine Cheatley (nee
Sell), Melissa Holt, Tammy Boyd, Elisabeth Williams, Joanne Kiesanowski,
Fiona Carswell, as well as Dale Tye, Marina Duvnjak and Katri Laike and are
the big name riders, with Otago’s Ali Shanks the most notable woman
missing from the start list.
