Australian National Track Championships
Dunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney - Team Sprint & Points Race
Queensland star Anna Meares, who last night won the sprint title, moved another event closer to her goal of a gold medal clean sweep in the women's sprint events when she paired with sister Kerrie to win the women's teams sprint.
Anna Meares says the final was even more special as it was a 'State of Origin' battle against New South Wales pair Kaarle McCulloch and Liz Georgouras. The Meares pair posted a new Australian best time of 34.553sec to win gold with the NSW pair finishing in 35.187sec.
The duo continued Queensland's unbeaten run of victory in the event which was introduced in 2002 and in which a Meares sister has figured every year, both for four of the six wins.
West Australian pair Kristine Bayley and Josephine Butler won the bronze medal.
In the women's 25km points race Tasmanian Belinda Goss won her first senior Australian title claiming the gold with 30 popints, five clear of silver medallist and first year senior, Tess Downing (Victoria) with New South Wales cyclist Amanda Spratt third on 18 points.
Anna and Kerrie Meares were in their usual jovial spirits after winning the Team Sprint: "It's really special for the Queensland girls the way, whether Kerrie and I or Kerrie and I working with up and coming juniors, have been able to dominate that event since it's beginning at nationals and I hope we can keep it in our state," said Anna. "I feel like it's a 'State of Origin' - cockroaches versus the cane toads."
The winning time came as a surprise to both Meares sisters.
"We're really impressed - both jaws have dropped (when we heard the time) we were staring at each other going 'holy crap'," laughed Anna Meares. "I said to her I reckon that was your lap cause I didn't feel so good and she said I reckon it was your lap cause I didn't feel so good - so we'll both take it."
"It's something really different racing as a team than racing against each other and I feel stronger because she's my sister and we make a really good team and race really well together," said Kerrie Meares after the win.
Belinda Goss reflected upon her recent form and her first National Title: "Probably my best summer so far and to come in and finally win a national title in my favourite event if really pleasing," said Goss. "It means finally stepping up and winning bike races at the senior level."
