Nicole Cooke recognised in BBC poll Fifth in BBC TV's Sports Personality of the Year programme Recognition for minority sport Nicole Cooke (Univega), the World Cup series Champion and Commonwealth Games road race bronze medallist, was fifth in the BBC TV's Sports Personality of the Year award, which was televised on Sunday 11th December. The Award was given to Zara Phillips, the World and European equestrian title holder. Phillips is daughter to Princess Anne, winner of the same award in 1971. Fifth is not usually a position which Cooke would be happy with, but to even have reached the shortlist indicates recognition of the young Welshwoman's achievements in a nation which loves soccer, tennis, golf, athletics and other mainstream sports. Cycling in the United Kingdom is not considered a mainstream sport, despite track and road success by the Great Britain team and by Cooke's impressive palmares.
