Stage 2 Greiz - Schleiz, 123km
Another hot day for the riders, the skies were blue again and there was very little wind. Things stayed together early on, despite some attempts to create breaks. Sigrid Corneo (Nobili) managed to get away to a maximum of 1 minute, 20 seconds. The race did break up, with a leading group at 20km containing Nicole Cooke (Univega) her team-mates Karin Thürig and Christiane Soeder, Zoulfia Zabirova (Team Bigla), Tina Liebig and Trixi Worrack (Nürnberger), Edita Puckinskaite and Olivia Gollan (Nobili), Amber Neben and Annette Beutler (Buitenpoort-Flexpoint), Theresa Senff (AA Drink) and Diana Ziulute (Safi). With 10km to go, Cooke escaped with Zabirova. The pair rode through the narrow lanes and rolling countryside into Schleiz together. With the line within striking distance, Cooke attacked and sprinted. Zabirova responded, but was strong, Cooke crossed the line first, but admitted that she really didn't know she was going to win until the line appeared. Hanke Kupfernagel, who was in yellow this morning finished 4 minutes, 26 seconds down on the stage winner, meaning that Cooke took over the race lead. This is Cooke's first Thüringen Rhundfarht and her first win in the event. Her team, Univega held yellow after the prologue win by Christiane Soeder on Tuesday. Other competitions also had new leaders, sprints went to Rochelle Gilmore (Safi) from Jenny Macpherson, young rider went to Linda Villumsen (Buitenpoort-Flexpoint) and points to Sigrid Corneo. Thereasa Senff (AA Drinks) retained the mountains jersey.
