Stage 3

Tassullo to Ruffrè del Mendola - 87km

Race Writeup

Svetlana Bubnenkova (Fenixs Colnago) sealed her overall win in the Giro del Trentino with a seventh place on the final stage from Tassullo to Ruffrè del Mendola. The stage win went to Andrea Graus (Team Bigla), who crossed the line 36 seconds ahead of young rider, Modesta Vzesniauskaite (Team FRW).

94 riders departed the Square Carlo Antonio Pilati in Tassullo for the 87km stage which included 4 climbs for the mountains competition. The race stayed together until Vigo di Ton e Sporminore, when Svetlana Bubnenkova went away with Nicole Brandli (Team Bigla) and Edita Puckinskaite (Nobili). The three were contenders for the overall General Classification and caused a counter-attack by Karin Thürig (Univega), who took Andrea Graus away with her too.

Graus managed to go ahead alone and managed a maximum gap of 1 minute 55 seconds. Modesta Vzesniauskaite (Team FRW) chased her down at about 69km and caught her with a resurgent Thürig, who had been dropped by Graus at 52km. The trio were chased by loine rider, Tatiana Sharakova (Chirio Forno d’Asolo), who managed to make contact with them with 78km to go. At this point in the stage, the quartet were about 3 minutes ahead of a group containing Priska Doppmann (Univega), Claudia Hausler (Équipe Nürnberger), Svetlana Boubnenkova (Fenixs Colnago) and Nicole Brändli (Team Bigla).

So, the two groups had crafted the finishing result - Andrea Graus managed to break clear of Vzesniauskiate and Thürig to take a lone victory of the stage, raising her arms in a victory salute in rain-soaked Ruffrè del Mendola, having braved a thunderstorm to get there first.

Race Director, Audenzio Tiengo, president of the organising committee, the Polisportiva Faedo Grumo,  was pleased with 13th edition of the Giro del Trentino and commented "our race is now a fixture on the international elite women's calendar. I am impressed with the high level of competition in 2006 on a difficult course. I would like to thank our sponsors for their continued support, in addition to the support given by the region of Trentino and the province of Trento."

Race winner, Svetlana Boubnenkova said afterwards "I have demonstrated that I have good form at the moment - having won 2 stages and been in a controlling position in the third. This has been a hard race, I have worked hard for the victory, but I prepared well too. I am looking forward to the Italian National Championships and the Giro."
