Stage 1 Dro - Dreno - 84.1km
Svetlana Boubnenkova (Fenix Colnago) continued where she left off last year, with a win on the first stage of the Giro del Trentino. Nicole Brändli (Team Bigla) was one rider who was able to stay with Bubnenkova on her attack, but even she drifted away to a deficit of almost two minutes by the end of the stage. Before the start in Dro, the locals welcomed the race to their town, with special wishes to the five riders from the Giant Pro Cycling team, which is registered in Hong Kong and contains Chinese and Hong Kong riders for the Tour. Early in the race, at around 10km and just before the first climb, Boubnenkova went off the front as one of a quartet of contenders for the stage win : Nicole Brändli, Edita Puckinskaite (Nobili) and Claudia Hausler (Équipe Nürnberger) were also there. Nicole Cooke (Univega) made her way across to the group. However, the pace set by Boubnenkova split the group, Puckinskaite and Hausler were the first casualties. Boubnenkova and Brändli continued together over the remaining two climbs together, whilst behind them, a smaller group raced a few minutes ahead of the peleton. Claudia Hausler, Tina Liebig (Équipe Nürnberger), Nicole Cooke, Christiane Soeder (Univega), Edita Puckinskaite (Nobili) and Patricia Schwager (Elk Aus) were in that second group. Boubnenkova and Brändli were together until 4km from the finish, when Boubnenkova attacked and opened up the gap on Brändli. The following group also split, finishing separately, whilst the Andrea Graus (Elk Haus) and Noemi Cantele (Team Bigla) were the first in from the peleton, over 15 minutes down on the winner.
