Race Review - Round 9 - GP Ouest France - Plouay

The Plouay World Cup race took place today, Saturday. The conditions were cool with intermittent rain. It didn't dry up at all during the race and competitors looked like they'd been riding an off-road event as they finished in the heavy drizzle. Locals claim that Bretagne is the heart of French, even European, cycling and it was easy to imagine riders escaping from working on the land by becoming professional cyclists - training for hours in the cold and wet of legend. When the riders finished, they looked like they had finished an early season pro-men's classic such as the Paris-Roubaix, not an event which took place in the 'height' of summer.........

There was not too much action early on in the race. The peleton completed the first three laps 'en groupe.' Then, there was an attempt by French rider, Magali Mocquery, who managed to stay away for almost a lap. Then, with an escape during the 6th of 8 14km laps, Noemi Cantele looked strong and was a contender for a solo victory, until Edita Puckinskaite stormed across the gap with 1 to go and joined the Bigla escapee. The pair managed to stay away and the sprint went to Noemi Cantele (Team Bigla). Their final margin on the bunch was 32 seconds.

The bunch sprint was a hotly contested affair, not least because the points difference for the World Cup standings was just 4 points in favour of Australian Oenone Wood over Susanne Ljungskog. As the bunch approached, Wood's leader's jersey was in full view, but as they reached 50m to go, Monica Holler forced her way to the front and took the line first. She was clearly delighted with winning the bunch sprint.

The efforts of the Buitenpoort-Flexpoint team was not enough to steal the World Cup lead today and Susanne Ljungskog crossed the line in the bunch in 11th place, looking spent and resigned to retaining second overall. Mirjam Melchers van Poppel closed the gap on Ljungskog with 8th place, which gave her 18 points compared to Ljungskog's 10 points.

The GP Ouest France is a huge event - a 3 day festival of cycling. Friday provides everyday cyclists with the opportunity to ride one of 3 circuits - up to a maximum of 150km. There were over 2000 riders this year. In addition, there must have been 200 'camping cars' too - 'campervans', parked along the finishing straight and around the town. Everywhere there was a flat space, there was a campervan parked, each with a satellite dish tuned in, no doubt, to the live coverage from French TV. Saturday starts with a race for the amateur men (espoirs and uncontracted) in the morning and then, of course, there is the women's World Cup race in the afternoon. Sunday has the attraction of the professional men's race, which in 2005 is a part of the 'Pro Tour'. The town is 'en fete' for the weekend - there was a funfair and free fireworks and the main street was closed to traffic on Saturday to make way for street stalls which were open all day. Huge, well organised and very enjoyable - get there next year if you can!
