On a cold but thankfully dry day, Rachel Hughes (Oxford University CC) took the first of the Team MK/WCRA Handicap series at Milton Keynes Bowl sponsored by Team Issue, Phil Corley Cycles and Natures Kiss. Rachel
Hughes started in the larger 4th category and novice group with
a 2-lap advantage over a scratch group containing top riders Jeanette
Tebbutt (Team Luciano) and Laura Bissell (Team Fat Birds). The novices
worked effectively from the start and quickly made up ground on the
intermediate groups ahead. Emma Trott, starting in one of the intermediate
groups, saw the danger behind and broke clear and started to establish a
lead over the chasers. With 10 of the 35 laps gone the race came together
with the novices catching the intermediate groups and the scratch group
catching the growing bunch, with Emma Trott surviving for another 2 laps.
After a several laps of
concerted pressure, the scratch group had the bunch strung out with only
Rachel Hughes, team mate and fellow novice Lesley Parry-Jones and Lindsay
Clarke (Fenland Clarion) able to stay with the pace. This fast moving and
slimmed down bunch quickly gained a lap from the rest of the field, but
despite numerous attacks the scratch group were unable to crack the bunch
again to pull back the remainder of the handicapping. Emma Trott took the bunch sprint from a flying Rachel Hughes and Jeanette Tebbutt, who had done much of the work to break up the bunch throughout the race.
RESULTS
Joanna Rowsell (Sutton CC – DeVer Cycles) took round two of the WCRA/Team MK women’s handicap series at Milton Keynes Bowl. Teammate Louise Mahe took second and Rachel Hughes (Oxford Uni. CC) maintained her lead in the series sponsored by Team Issue, Phil Corley Cycles and Natures Kiss. In bitterly cold, windy but dry conditions Joanna Rowsell and teammate Louise Mahe quickly broke away from the 20 rider strong 4th cat., youth and novices group and after 5 laps had caught the intermediate group ahead of them, working well together with experienced cyclocross rider Liz Clayton (Lichfield City CC). The larger group behind quickly started to lose ground until, with 10of the 35 laps gone, they were caught by the scratch group containing Laura Bissell (Team Fat Birds) and series leader Rachel Hughes (Oxford Uni. CC). The additional speed put many of the novice riders into difficulty, but Sian Hughes (Cardiff Ajax) and Marcie Reinhart (Oxford Uni. CC) stayed with the pace as the scratch group driven on by Laura Bissell pulled them back up to the leaders Joanna Rowsell and Louise Mahe. Despite repeated attacks, Laura Bissell was unable to crack the leading group of 16; her only consolation being a win in the bunch sprint from Joanna Rowsell and Emma Trott.
Newcomer to road
racing, Jane Berry (Pembroke Velo) took round 3 of the WCRA/Team MK
women’s handicap series at Milton Keynes Bowl sponsored by Team Issue,
Phil Corley Cycles and Natures Kiss. With Rachel Hughes (oxford Uni. CC)
unable to start the final race in the series, team mate and second placed
overall, Lesley Parry-Jones donned the leaders yellow jersey. Laura Bissell (Team Fat Birds) and Emma Trott (Welwyn Wheelers) set a blistering pace for the early stages of the race to haul back the 1.5 lap deficit on the slower group ahead and in the process put series leader Lesley Parry-Jones and Debbie Capewell (Walsall Roads CC) into some difficulty. They soon caught the slower group and it was only newcomer Jane Berry and Sarah Reynolds (Brereton Wheelers) who stayed with the pace of the scratch group. With 10 laps remaining the scratch group swept up Lesley Parry-Jones, who this time was not caught out by the pace and stayed well tucked in at the back of the group. With 20 of the 27 laps gone, Laura Bissell clipped a wheel and crashed out of the race, but luckily was not badly hurt and decided to call it a day. At 5 laps to go the race came together with only Jane Berry a clear lap ahead of the rest as it headed for a bunch sprint with Rachel Lloyd (Rugby RCC) taking it from Jane Berry and Charlotte Colclough (Sleaford Wheelers).
