Tina Pic wins Pan American Road Race Championship

Race Review

Tina Pic (Dahlonega, Ga.) gave the United States its third continental championship and 11th medal at the 2005 Pan American Championships with a win in Saturday’s 84 kilometre women’s road race.

Pic took the sprint from a group of five riders ahead of silver medallist Yeilien Fernandez (CUB) and bronze medallist Yumari Gonzalez (CUB). Pic’s teammate, Laura Van Gilder (Pocono Pines, Pa. ) was fifth.

Christine Thorburn ( Menlo Park , Calif. ) placed sixth and Kristin Armstrong ( Boise , Idaho ) finished seventh.

Pic’s win on Saturday, along with Armstrong’s victory in the individual time trial and Erin Mirabella’s ( La Habra , Calif. ) gold medal in the points race, gives the United States three continental champions.

Pic’s win also results in an automatic entry into the 2005 UCI Road World Championships later this year in Madrid .
