Stage Review - Stage 6

There was a sting in the tail on the final stage of the Ladies Tour of Holland. In the South and the East, when the stage details say 'bergsprint' (mountain competition sprint point), it means more than a bridge over a railway!  There were 8 bergsprint points today and they helped to split the field - by the halfway point on the stage, the major protagonists for the stage had made their mark by breaking away off the front of the main bunch. 

Sara Carrigan (Van Bemmelen - AA Drinks), team-mate Theresa Senff, Olivia Gollan (Nürnberger), Nicole Brändli (Team Bigla), Loes Gunnewijk (Vrienden van het Platteland) and Susanne Ljungskog (Buitenpoort-Flexpoint) made a break with about 70km covered, but they were chased hard by the bunch. Once again, the Buitenpoort Flexpoint team drove the chase from the front to protect the leader's orange jersey, worn by Tanja Hennes. With only a minute separating the top 10, any attack was potentially dangerous.

Over the final climb and during the last 20km, the break was caught, but some of the original group remained strong and although the final 100m were uphill after a sharp right turn, the sprint was fierce. As the helmets of the riders came into view over the crown of the hill, Ljungskog was at the front of the bunch leading team leader, Mirjam Melchers van Poppel and a rapidly accelerating threat, Susanne de Goede (Van Bemmelen). Ljungskog was too strong, though and was able to celebrate the stage win with a one-handed salute on the tight, narrow finishing straight.

Hennes finished in the same group - thereby winning the race overall. It was an emotional group at the huge Buitenpoort-Flexpoint bus - they had taken the stage win, the overall team award, the points jersey (Hennes) and also the overall 1-2-3. A good day at the office for the team sponsored jointly by a catering company and a staffing agency......
