Stage Review - Stage 4a    Roden - Roden 82.2km 

The first stage of the day was held under slightly more comfortable conditions for the riders - the skies were overcast and there was a breeze, which helped to keep the temperatures down. Although rain threatened for much of the stage, it did not eventuate. 

With everything still together at the first sprint point of the day, the initiative was taken by Germany's Ina-Yoko Teutenberg, who charged up the main street in Norg just ahead of Tanja Hennes - who was defending the white sprinter's jersey.

Although she kept trying to make space between herself and the bunch, it took a long time for Teutenberg's efforts to 'break the elastic'. When she got away, she quickly built up over a minute's lead. With everyone looking at the Nürnberger team to close the gap, there was no real organised chase and it was left to Teutenberg to cross the line with a victory salute which lasted for about 50 metres. The bunch sprint was taken by Tanja Hennes (Buitenpoort-Flexpoint) - surprising a  van Bemmelen Sports - AA Drinks rider who thought she was leading out Susanne de Goede, unaware that Hennes and not de Goede was on her wheel.

The win on Stage 4a was enough to put Teutenberg into two jerseys - blue (most aggressive)  and the orange race leader's jersey. Ironically, she is unlikely to wear it on the road, as she is more likely to opt for a German team issue skinsuit for Stage 4b - the team time trial. The white jersey was retained by Tanja Hennes and the spotted mountains jersey stays with Sara Carrigan - there were no climbs on this stage. Regina Schleicher still made a trip to the podium today - to collect the green (points) jersey.

About the stage >> The first ten kilometres were really slow, then people started to attack and there were echelons forming on the front, but nothing happened. Then we got to 20km to go and I just decided to give it a go. I knew I wouldn't have any sprinting legs so I just thought I'd try it. I think people were thinking about the team time trial this afternoon and also I assume people were looking at Nürnberg - to close the gap, but why should they? Everyone knows we have just four riders left for the TTT and so even a minute is unlikely - I shouldn't think we'll be a danger.

Did you plan to try for this stage win?  >> We came into this week just looking to maybe win a stage and get some form, nothing more. Its good training.  We have three young riders - 

What about the rest of your season? >>  I will ride Rotterdam, then Nürnberg and then a bit of training in Germany and then the World Championships. After that, I will go back to the USA.
