Stage Review - Stage 8
The jury overnight amended the time cut-off for Stage 7 - the individual mountain time trial to give 31 riders an additional day in the saddle.
The stage was simple to describe - 22.6km up the pass from Brig in Switzerland, over the Sempione Pass (2005m) and down 48km to Dommodossola in Italy...........
The race left Brig riding 'tempo', but it didn't take long for the cracks to show. Very shortly after the start, there were two groups, divided by 25 seconds. At the head of affairs were Team Bigla, Bizkaia-Panda Software and Nobili Rubinetterie. The day was cool and overcast and as the riders climbed the pass, they ascended into cloud which made things wet and cold for them.
5km from the mountains competition line (which was at the Sempione Pass), 3 riders went away and stayed away over the Pass. They were Edita Puckinskaite (Nobili Rubinetterie), Nicole Braendli (Team Bigla) and Joane Somaribba (Bizkaia-Panda Software).
The three were chased by five others on the descent - Stahurskaia (Bianchi), Melchers van Poppel (Buitenpoort-Flexpoint), Neben (Buitenpoort-Flexpoint), Bubnenkova (Fenixs) and Moreno Allué (Spain). 42km into the 69.9km course, the three escapees had a 35 second advantage on their chasers. And so they continued, with 15km to go, they were 15 seconds up but the gap was falling. With 9km to go, they were in sight and just a few hundred metres later, they were caught. 3km from the finish, Moreno Allué was dropped. She didn't manage to et back on and finished on her own behind the seven.
Sarah Ulmer (Team SATS) and Annette Beutler (Michaela Fannini-Record Rox) also broke away from the main chasing group. They finished together ahead of the bunch.
The sprint was long and straight and as far as could be seen along the finishing straight, Svetlana Bubnenkova was at the head of the race, driving for the line. She was absolutely overjoyed to take the victory ahead of Zinaida Stahurskaia and Edita Puckinskaite.
