Stage 1

Kathy Watt dominated the first stage of the DeBortoli Wines Tour – a 2 day stage race through Victoria’s wine region – the Yarra Valley.

She stayed with the bunch for the first part of the stage, which included the 10km climb to Toolangi. However, as the race approached the second major climb of the day, the relatively short climb on Old Healesville Road, Watt was away on her own, albeit with a led of less than a minute. The chase was led by 2004 winner of this race, Caitlin Fraser. Within Fraser’s group were Watt’s team-mates, Claire Baxter and Maryam Rogers – who will have done nothing to help Fraser’s cause. The pace caused by the chase had opened a gap to a second bunch, about 4 minutes further back.

With under 10km to go, Watt had opened her gap to just over a minute and climbing Old Healesville Road, she looked comfortable and powerful. The chasing group were again led by Fraser, who was marked by Baxter.

Just managing a one-handed victory wave and a look of weariness was understandable as Kathy Watt crossed the finish line to take Stage 1. She had ridden most of it alone in temperatures reaching 30’C in bright sunshine.

The bunch sprint was taken by Briana James ahead of Elizabeth Hayman.
