| Home | Kerry Mears to miss Athens Olympics Back injury ruins season
Kerry Mears, one of the Australian sisters who dominated the medals at the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002, will miss the rest of the 2004 season due to a back injury. On medical advice and in an effort to reduce the risk of permanent injury, Mears has been forced to withdraw from the Australian track squad. She has suffered an injury to the discs in her lower back. The problem has been there for about a year and concerns three bulging discs. The injury also means that she will miss the track World Championships, which will be held in Melbourne in May. The sprinter would have been a favourite for a medal here too. She has won track medals at World and Commonwealth level and has also been highly successful in the World Cup track events held throughout the season. Kerry's sister Anna continues her preparation for the Worlds and the Olympics.
