More Olympic Consolations - Rossner takes Nürnberger, Wood wins World Cup 2004

Sprinting to take a home victory, Petra Rossner finished off her racing career in glorious style. Using her speed to take the win ahead of World Cup leader, Oenone Wood, Rossner won on home ground in the Rund um die Nürnberger. In a repeat of last week's Rotterdam 1-2, Angela Brodtka was second, whilst Wood made sure of her World Cup title by coming third. Mirjam Melchers, who has been consistently in the placings in 2004 came 8th and finished the World Cup in fourth position. Zoulifa Zabirova, who won two of the Rounds early in the season came fifth overall. 

In an event where 95 started and 95 finished, the Rund um die Nürnberger was a tight event - most of the riders finished in large bunches split by just a few seconds. With the Rossner / Brodtka rivalry spilling into another event and Oenone Wood out to defend her World Cup lead, noone was going to be allowed any space off the front. Rossner, renowned for her sprint finished at the front of a truly world-class field to take this, the penultimate significant event of the year.

Next time these riders will be together is in just under 3 weeks - at the World Championships in Italy. The women's road race is on Saturday 2nd October.
