Geneviève Jeanson (CAN, RONA) today
won the Montreal leg of the Women's Cycling World Cup. The 22-year-old
cyclist outsprinted Judith Arndt (GER, Nurberger Versicherung) and Olivia
Gollan (AUS, Australian National Team). The three first riders completed
the race's 99.6 kilometres in the same time of 2 hours, 55 minutes and 46
seconds, at an average speed of 33,99 km/h.
After this sixth leg of the World
Cup, Australian Oenone Wood is still the overall leader of the series with
202 points. She is followed by Russian Zoulfia Zabirova and Dutch national
Mirjam Melchers.
"This year we (Team RONA)
decided to race more conservatively, just cover attacks and attacks
ourselves at the last moment", said Jeanson. Indeed few attacks
developed into a real threat. France's Jeannie Longo created the most
animation, especially early in the race, as she attacked several times in
the Camilien-Houde climb leading to the finish line. As the riders had to
climb it 12 times, the Camilien-Houde hill got the Montreal made the
Montreal circuit infamous as the most difficult course on the World Cup
circuit. Like every year, its repetition thinned the pack as each lap took
its toll in the main field.
Jeanson launched her decisive attack
200 metres from the finish, after she and her teammate Erinne Willock
reeled in Quark's Lyne Bessette, who had attacked 200 metres before. The
lead group was still 20-strong. "We had a tail wind, the climb wasn't
quite as tough as usual", added Jeanson. Her attack was effective and
she crossed the line with a few bicycle lengths in front of her closest
rivals.
The Montreal World Cup will be
followed by the Tour of Greater Montreal, a four-stage, three-day race
held from May 31st to June 2nd. The next World Cup Race will be the Grand
Prix Ouest France in Plouay, France, on August 28.
