Race Wide Open as Wood looks to Defend leader's Jersey
The second round of the UCI World Cup takes place this weekend in Italy. Running prior to the men's classic, the Milan San Remo, the event moves the series to Europe for 4 races and until late May, when the sixth round takes place in Montreal Canada. (Click here for World Cup Calendar)
The Primavera Rose will cover the final 120km of the men's race and includes the climbs of the the Capo Bertta, Cipressa and then a famous climb in cycling, the Poggio.
If form in Round 1, the Geelong event is anything to go by, the Australians will be strong. Although, their adaptation to spring in Europe may be a factor - that said, inclimate weather in Italy earlier in March stopped many training......
Oenone Wood, who took the Geelong race in a bunch sprint is a rider to watch - she will be defending her leader's jersey, but that does not necessarily mean she will be looking for the win. Her team-mates could take advantage of the focus on her and slip away. Petra Rossner is a strong sprinter and so too are current Road World Champion, Susanne Ljungskog and SATS team-mates Rochelle Gilmore and even Sara Symington. The American T-Mobile squad contains several fast finishers, including current USA Champion, Amber Neben. Then, on the other hand, the race could always be won by a solo breakaway, as it was last year.
The World Cup comprises 9 rounds throughout the season.
