Buninyong, nr Ballarat, Victoria

With 2004 an Olympic year, there was more at stake than 'just' the National Championship crown. The Championships are an Olympic selection event, so riders are keen to prove themselves here.

On-form Oenone Wood, who took the Jayco Bay Series just 4 days ago with a victory in the final of the five races to match her win of the first of the series took the Championship with a 'long' 41minute ride.

Sara Carrigan (Queensland) missed a third gold in a row in this event by 27 seconds, whilst former Olympian and Victorian 'local', Kathy Watt, took bronze.

The event was contended on a warm day with a stiff headwind breeze on the main climb.

The womens' road race takes place on Saturday over 100km - 10 laps of the Buninyong circuit near Ballarat.
