Round three of the Northern Ireland www.WomensCycling.net league was run in conjunction with the Barry Murphy Memorial Border Classic, possibly the richest one day race to be held in Ireland in 2004 ably promoted by North Monaghan - Crannog Ireland. This event was also a round of the Irish Classic League and was named as a key international selection race for the women.
A high quality field took on the two lap 85km race run on the rolling roads surrounding the North Monaghan area. The field stayed together fairly well until they hit the climbs at about 30kms covered when a group of ten riders forged ahead. This group included all of the race favourites.
Approaching the finish of the first lap Jacobs attacked hard pulling out a reasonable lead and came through the sprint prime line with about 20 seconds advantage to claim her 60 euro prize. In the second lap the break worked hard to bring her back and had her caught a few kms later.
Despite numerous attacks the break stayed together until the last two kms when Roisin Kennedy took a flyer when the speed dropped and when the reaction came it was too late. Kennedy came across the line well clear of the chasing bunch to take the best win of her career. Mary Boyd led the bunch sprint out around the last corner and held on to win it fairly comfortably from Orla Hendron by a length.
