Geelong, Victoria, Australia, hosts the first round of the UCI World Cup for the second year running. As the warm-up to it, the Geelong Women's Tour promises to be an exciting event, with excellent venues and the top class field flying in early to get acclimatised. Of course, Geelong hosted part of the Jayco Bay Classic in January - with many of the local and top Australian riders (plus a handful of international visitors) returning now, this corner of Australia must be increasingly recognised as one of the places to be at the start of the year.....

Geelong Women's Tour

The Geelong Women's Tour is a 4 stage event running from Sunday 22nd until Wednesday 25th February. To see the list of competitors, click here.

Stage 1 - 8km Prologue

An out-and-back along The Esplanade at Portarlington provides the prologue TT course. The backdrop of Port Phillip Bay will be scenic if the weather's good, but any wind or rain will come straight in off the sea..... First rider 17:30hrs, last rider 19:30hrs.

Stage 2 - 30km Criterium

Using the circuit visited by the Jayco this and previous years, the circuit winds its way up and down next to Geelong's Botanical Gardens. The first left turn after the start/finish can be tight and the road surface is not smooth, whilst the turn at the bottom of the hill usually sees the bunch strung out - having narrowed to get through the roadway just before. The climb will sap energy from the legs time after time.

Stage 3 - 80km Road Stage

This is 5 laps of an 15.5km circuit. Out on the coast roads for the second half of the circuit, on a long straight road which could exposed if the weather is bad. The turns at either end of the circuit could catch riders off guard and allow a break to go if the bunch is not attentive.

Stage 4 - 115km Road Stage

Using a huge circuit from Lara to Lara, this final stage could provide the opportunity for a group to get away early and from there, steal time on the bunch. Exposed at times, it may not be a solo breakaway rider's course, but then again......... there is the climb of Mt Wallace, which the organisers are recommending a 39x25 gear ratio for.

Geelong UCI World Cup - Round 1

Fought out over 9 rounds throughout the season, Geelong hosts Round 1 -  the start of the 2004 competition. Whilst reports are that 2003 World Cup Champion, Nicole Cooke has stayed away in deference to her Athens (Olympic) build up, there are plenty in the field who will want to stamp their authority on this, the first race and therefore their intentions for the year.
