Team Rona's perspective on the race :
GENEVIÈVE JEANSON RANKS FIFTH AT THE WORLD'S TIME TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Hamilton, Ontario, October 8, 2003 - Geneviève Jeanson missed the podium by 22 seconds today at the world time trial championship. The 22-year-old Canadian of Team RONA/Esker finished in fifth position, 48 seconds behind the winner, Spaniard Joane Somarriba Arroba. Somarriba completed the 20.8-kilometre course in 28 minutes, 23.23 seconds at an average speed of 43.96 km/h. German Judith Arndt, Russian Zoulfia Zabirova last year's winner, and Switzerland's Karin Thürig also finished ahead of Jeanson.
Jeanson's Canadian teammate Lyne Bessette finished 15th, one minute 48 seconds behind the winner.
"This race is good news and bad news, joked Jeanson after the race. The good news is that I gained 32 seconds compared with my time on this course at the Nationals last June, in spite of stronger winds making it tougher today. My fifth place is certainly nothing to be ashamed of, considering the calibre of the four women who beat me. The bad news? You know, I wanted to win this race! I wanted to perform in front of my fellow countrymen… My target was 28' 30", I missed it by 41 seconds. Had I made it, I would have finished second!"
"I'm happy that the Canadian Cycling Association allowed André Aubut, her coach and RONA/Esker's (directeur sportif) to follow me in the team car today. With Yuri Kashirin, Team Canada's (directeur sportif), they formed a very effective and stimulating pair, it helped me a lot."
