Last year's champion, Laurence Leboucher took bronze in the 2003 Championships. She finished on her own behind the other two medallists, who rode neck and neck throughout the race. At the finish, it was 24 year old van den Brand who took the sprint. However, Kupfernagel had ridden strongly all day and had been ahead at times. Indeed, whilst ahead later in the race, she crashed into a fence and was hit from behind by ven den Brand, who could not avoid her.
