Canadian
Geneviève Jeanson of the RONA/Esker cycling team took the lead at the first
stage of the Tour of the Gila, held a five-stage race held until Sunday, May 4,
in New Mexico. Jeanson has a 1’
27” lead over her fellow Canadian Manon Jutras of Team Saturn.
Today’s
stage was a 25.3-km time trial, and the racers had to deal not only with a
challenging course (more than 8 km of climbing) but with very strong winds as
well. Jeanson completed the stage
in 40 minutes flat, at an average speed of 37.95 km/h.
Tomorrow’s
stage will be a 113-km road race with a mountaintop finish following a 15 km, 1st
category climb.

Team
RONA/Esker is one of only two Canadian women’s cycling teams in the Elite
Category that are recognized by the International Cycling Union. The team is
made up of four Canadian racers (Geneviève Jeanson, Andrea Hannos, Carrie Tuck
and Erinne Willock), French racers Catherine Marsal and Magali Le Floc’h, New
Zealander Melissa Holt, German Karen Bockel and American Kristen LaSasso.
