Sea Otter Classic Stage 4

nr San Francisco, California, USA

Stage 1     Stage 2    Stage3   Stage4

160km

Canadian Geneviève Jeanson of the RONA/Esker cycling team today won the Sea Otter Classic, a four-day stage race held in the Monterey, California area. It is Jeanson's second major win in as many weeks, as she won the Redlands Classic last week in Southern California.

Having worn the Sea Otter leader's jersey since the first stage Wednesday, Jeanson sealed her win by finishing third in today's stage, behind her ex-teammate Manon Jutras and Lyne Bessette, both Canadians with Team Saturn. They all finished with the same time, with a good gap in front of T Mobile's Kim Bruckner. This caused Bessette and Jutras to gain one rank, to the second and third sports in general classification respectively.

Today's 160-km stage was held in cool, rainy, windy weather. For the first half of the race the women faced winds of up to 50 km/h. One highlight of the stage was an early - and long -- break by Saturn's Ina Teutenberg and T Mobile's Dotsie Cowden. None of them being a GC threat, the break lasted for more than 75 km, while behind, RONA/Esker's Magali Le Floc'h, Melissa Holt and Karen Bockel effectively paced the main field and kept the gap in the 50-70 second-range. From the 100th kilometer of racing T Mobile launched attacks after attack, but the first threatening one happened at about 15 km from the finish - because it included Dede Barry, only 2'49'' back in GC. Jeanson left the pack and started to bridge, accompanied by Saturn's Jutras and Bessette. They bridged to the break, passed them, and in the end Jutras won in the sprint.

"I'm happy", said Jeanson at the end of the race. "I'm pretty happy with two wins in two weeks, but I'm also happy that it's over. We had an incomplete team for nine of the last 10 days of racing, so we had an awful lot of work to do. Today I owe a lot to Magali (Le Floc'h), Karen (Bockel) and Melissa (Holt). Without their awesome work I don't know how I could have managed."

RONAS/Esker's next race will be The Tour of the Gila, in New Mexico, next April 30 - May 4.
