SEA
OTTER CLASSIC: BESSETTE GETS THE
STAGE, JEANSON KEEPS THE JERSEY
Canadian Geneviève Jeanson of the
RONA/Esker cycling team kept her leader’s jersey at the Sea Otter Classic, a
stage race held until tomorrow in Monterey, California.
Saturn’s Lyne Bessette won the stage, but Jeanson finished right behind
her and was credited with the same time, about 20 seconds in front of the main
field. Laura Van Gilder (Saturn)
took third spot in front of the French champion Magali Le Floc’h of Team
RONA/Esker. Four of the five
RONA/Esker riders finished among the top seven.
Jeanson
increased her overall lead over T Mobile’s Kim Bruckner to 1:31, thanks to her
12-second lead today and her bonuses earned at the finish and in hot spot
sprints. Bessette is third, 1:39
behind Jeanson.
For
today’s stage the racers completed 10 laps of the Laguna Seca raceway and its
one hill, for a total of 40 km. Everybody
watched everybody else for the first seven laps, except for two hot sport
sprints won by Jeanson and a short attack by Saturn in lap 6.
Three laps from the finish Bessette and Jeanson broke away and stayed
away. They finished in the same
time, Bessette ahead of Jeanson.
“Lyne
deserved that stage”, said Jeanson. “She
worked harder and longer than I did in the breakaway.
But I did gain a few seconds over Bruckner in GC, for a little extra
margin before tomorrow’ tough stage.”
Tomorrow,
the fourth and last stage will be a 160-km road race on a rolling course.
