January 8-12 2003
Race 5 - Crown Casino
The Jayco Geelong Bay classic is a series of 5 criteriums in the Australian state of Victoria, actually, more accurately, 5 criteriums in locations around Port Philip Bay (where Melbourne is located) in Australia.
Hemsley Victorious in Showpiece Finale to Jayco Geelong Bay Classic
Margeret Hemsley, who rode so bravely to finish the Commonwealth Games RR in August after falling and breaking her collarbone, showed a return to form with a stylish solo attack around the Crown Casino circuit in Melbourne's centre today. The bunch sprint was led in by consistent finisher in this series Kate Bates. Mactier took third, whilst Rochelle Gilmore was unable to finish - having previously suffered with illness in Race 2.
Bates Takes Title
Thanks to her consistency, Kate Bates took the Series title and despite leading the Sprints competition going into the final race, only managed one further point during Race 5. Olivia Gollan took victory in this competition, having gained 6 points during Race 5 to give her 15 points overall, to Bates' 13 overall.
