Van Moorsel sets new world hour record
October 1st 2003
Following a year of dedication to the task, Leontien Zijlaard-Van Moorsel has broken the women's Hour Record by almost 1km. The previous record was held by another of the world's most famous female cyclists, Jeannie Longo Ciprelli. Longo's record of 45.094km was set in Mexico City in December 2000. She was sixth in both the World Time Trial Championships and World Road Race Championships in 2003.
After a crash during her warmup, the start was slightly delayed from 09:00am until 09:05am. Conditions were still and warm. Van Moorsel rode to schedule and surpassed Longo's ride at every checkpoint.
Despite a relatively quiet year, Leontien Zijlaard-Van Moorsel will be at Athens in 2004 to defend her titles and at the World Championships in May 2004.
