Australian Championships 2003

With Europe caught in the grip of a freezing winter, Australian riders get to race their national championships in 2 weeks time in Ballarat on 18 January.

Defending road race champion Margaret Hemsley seems fully recovered from her bad crash in 2001 during a race in Spain only to crash out in the Commonwealth Games event, eventually finishing in 12th place. Riding for Team Nurnberger meant training in Germany after the Worlds and this started in November. Hemsley starts in the Jayco Geelong Criterium Series January 8th-12th in Victoria before going on to the Championships.

It is disappointing that Anna Millward will not be on the start line as her comeback to the sport may not be until half the season has been completed; still not fully recovered from injuries received at the 2001 World Championships, she has undergone all sorts of tests but still the weakness in her right hamstring shows no signs of improving, all the more remarkable was her 2nd place in the Games time trial.

The injury has meant that she is no longer on the Saturn team list.
