Held in Ohio, USA, the Wendy's Classic is somewhat different in that the General Classification each day is not based upon time as is usual in stage races but on points gained during sprints in each stage and the finishing place oaf rider at the end of the stage.
The first stage was a criterium around the streets of Powell and winner at the end of the 48 kilometres was Nicole Freedman - Rona from Tina Mayola-Pic - Diet Rite. Freedman, the national criterium champion of USA, used her experience because her lead out rider, Melissa Holt, crashed on the opening lap; she got up and back in the race with a 30 second gap but a race official said that she was due a lap out yet when the bunch came past she was pulled from the race as being lapped !
With the last lap looming, Freedman and Mayola-Pic were level on points taken during the mid race sprints when Cathy Marsal - Saturn, attacked;, Team Rona immediately put Amy Jarvis, Gail Longnecker (many might remember Gail from her time spent in the UK racing) and Andrea Hannos at the front of the bunch to reel Marsal in and when the gap was just 50 metres Mayola-Pic and Freedman jumped and caught Marsal 10 metres from the line with Freedman getting her wheel in front at the line; this gave her the overall lead.
