Bedford 2 Day - 25th 26th May 2002 - from Race Organisers

Race organisers CJ Farquharson & Suzanne Lawrence are pleased to announce that, after some uncertainty, the three stages for the 2-day race seem likely to receive final police approval. "Bedfordshire Police have banned all sports activities (not just cycling) from using the B660, east of Bedford, which was the focus for the event last year due to concerns over safety. We have been in negotiations with them over alternative routes since before Christmas and are now close to agreement over other courses for the three stage event in May 2002".

This year's event is promoted by WomensCycling.net, whilst 3M UK Plc and Lee and Son Roofing have kindly agreed to sponsor the event, with further support coming from Pegasus Business Software. The organisers have also applied for further funding, via SportsMatch.

The 3 stage, 2-day event will take place over the weekend of May 25th and 26th, in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire - promoted by the newest internet-based news service for international women's' cyclesport - www.WomensCycling.net "The site is new and will expand in time. At the moment, thanks to contributions by race promoters and followers, results from events around the world are posted within hours of completion. In the future, daily news items and updates about the women's' calendar - as well as features about races, clubs and riders - will be part of the service provided. We are pleased to be associated with such an exciting, international enterprise. Already, links have been forged between a UK and an Australasian club as a result of the site launch!"

This event is the only 2-day event on the women's UK calendar in 2002. "We are pleased that international interest has been so great - instead of seeing the same faces week-in, week-out, UK riders will meet new opposition in the form of teams from overseas travelling to the event. In addition, we want to encourage any riders wishing to test their legs in a multi-stage, multi-day event to "have a go" since they will find that there are others at the same level - club riders compete in the event and are rewarded in that the prize list extends to 3rd and 4th categories for stage and overall placings. We try to ensure that everyone enjoys the event and goes home satisfied."

The format for the race will be :

Saturday am - 40 mile road stage

Saturday pm - 1.5mile individual TT

Sunday pm - 60 mile road stage

Race HQ will be in Bedford. Teams from the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Scotland and Ireland have been invited. Race details will be posted in www.WomensCycling.net - look for the 2-day coverage.

"We have worked hard to ensure that this year's event will take place - the details of the routes have changed several times. We are determined to ensure that our sponsors - 3M UK Plc, Lee & Son Roofing, Pegasus Business Software and WomensCycling.net are not disappointed by the standard of the event we are promoting. The event is part of the National Women's Series and also provides the opportunity for domestic riders to test themselves against international competition prior to the Commonwealth Games.
