National Championships 2002

From Jon Miles

Ireland- Stamullen

WOMEN - 36 miles

An absolute record was set in Stamullen when Geraldine Gill - VC Quintin won her 4th road race title in as many years when she finished alone at the end of the 36 miles.

The racing really started with just 4 miles covered when Lorraine Manning - Ulster IRC, attacked and this drew Gill, Louise Moriarty - Dublin Skip, and Colette Swift - Surrey League but it was the fist climb of Harbourstown that set the seal. It was here that Gill forced the gap over her fellow breakaways and went clear.

Gill rapidly gained time over the hilly course and by the halfway point the gap was 4 minutes; she managed to increase this to 5 minutes by the finish. Back with the chasers and it was Manning who jumped clear to claim the Silver medal with Moriarty taking the Bronze but all the plaudits must go to Gill for a superb ride.
