Saturday 25th May 2002 -     Stage 1 - 44 miles (70km) Road Stage     10:30hrs    (amended - different to handbook)

Signing-on open 09:15hrs-10:00hrs 

Team Manager & Race Convoy briefing 10:00hrs – inside Officials Room

Rider briefing 10:20hrs inside race HQ

Don’t forget to hand in your completed Neutral Service sheets (2 required – 1 for each Neutral Service car) and wheels

Description : 

Using the "Astwood" Circuit, this rolling circuit near Cranfield should provide an exciting start to the 2002 event. There are a couple of stiff climbs in the 2 miles / 3.2km before the finish line, before the course turns onto a wide road for 3miles of flattish riding. The "back" of the circuit into Astwood involves some twisting lanes and a short sharp climb into the village. 

Road surfaces throughout are good. 

Circuit Details :

Assemble in Sports Hall car park, Cranfield University, continue - neutralised - to turn right out of University Campus into College Road. Proceed to “T” junction

TURN right (M) (1mile (1.6km)) and within 100m,

TURN left (M) into Astwood Road race will be deneutralised adjacent to first clump of trees, 150m from junction (1.2miles (2km))

Proceed through Bourne End, care sharp left bend, towards Astwood, where pass through Lap / Finish line (2.3miles (3.7km)) 50m beyond “30” speed signs at entrance to village. Continue to

TURN left (M) at small junction and then

TURN left (M) onto A422 (2.5miles (4km)) and continue along A422 through to Chicheley, where

TURN left (M) towards North Crawley (8miles (12.8km)). Proceed along lane through village entrance to “T” junction, where (care)

TURN left (M) along North Crawley main street, continue and exit village, follow road towards Cranfield. Before entering village,

TURN left (M) (11miles (17.6km)) to pass through deneutralised start and proceed to lap / finish area 

One lap = 10miles (16km). The lap board will show 4 laps to go when passed for the first time

 The Prime Hill is the lap / finish line. There will be primes on Laps 1,2 and 3.

The Sprints point is 150m after the left turn into Astwood Road (where the race was deneutralised). There will be 3 sprints – on laps 1,2 and 3.
